Veronica Mars hearts Nikon

I know that the question of "What camera does Veronica use?" has been raised before, and given that I am an extreme photography junkie, and thus notice these things, I thought I'd bring this up:

Her camera has changed. Again.

In the series opener, judging from the time it was filmed and what I can see of the body, she's using a Nikon D2H with a big ol' zoom lens -- someone said the 70-200 f/2.8 VR, but I don't remember off-hand. This is a big, professional camera, and a very expensive setup, costing close to $5K at the time it was filmed.

After that, it seems, someone figured out that non-09'er Veronica probably couldn't afford that setup AND the 15-inch PowerBook, so she switched to the Nikon 8800, a point-and-shoot that still has a lot of great features. In my mind, I like to think that the first camera is owned by the office, and the second one is hers, absolving continuity errors.

Well, in the opening sequence for the new season, she is clearly using the ubiquitous Nikon D70 with what I'm almost positive is the cheaper, but still bad-ass, 80-200 f/2.8D. During the episode she was all over that D70, so I guess she's moved up in the world with her personal camera. I'm not sure about the lens she was using during the ep, but it looked like a 17-35 f/2.8.

I'm not sure if Nikon is paying for all this, but they should. It could just be that the glorious cinematographer uses Nikon digital cameras to set up his equipment, so he has a bunch of them laying around the set.

If none of this held any value to you, at least that last link goes to a very cool feature discussing how the cinematographer captures the look of the show, including the "streaky" flash-backs.

True. But I think she just wants to use the same computer and camera that I do, because I'm that cool, haha.
lol yeah. i definitely noticed the change in the camera. i'm a photography geek like that. oh how i wish i owned one. alas, my olympus p&s, olympus c-60, and olympus om10 (i think, haha.)
Dude, I covet that camera she used in the season 2 premiere. Thanks for the links.
No problem. That camera is actually (relatively) cheap these days.
whoa so impressed by the camera knowledge :) can i ask you a camera/totally non veronica related question?
I have a Nikon F60 autofocus SLR with a built in flash, which i got many years ago and although i like it and will still keep i want to upgrade to a digital version that has similar features but is maybe slightly lighter and not too expensive, i am guessing you're not a camera sales person or anything so i understand if this question is inappropriate or annoying etc but if you could recommend me one i would really love it/you ;)
It sounds like you're looking for the Nikon d50, a great first digital SLR.
I have been trying like crazy to get photography lessons for the last year, but can't find anyone in my area offering them.

Not being a photography geek (but WANTING to be one) I still find this very interesting.

Thanks for posting.
This reminds me of Paul Simon's song Kodachrome haha.
I was asking that question and, lo and behold, someone posted about it! "I think it, it happens."

Oy, yessss, obsessed with VM. :D
Oooh, camera talk just gets me all damn excited. Sometimes I ogle Veronica's equiptment more than I ogle Jason. Especially the Nikon in the beginning of the show. What I would do for that camera...
Now the Nikon gets top billing. I got excited when I saw it's now the first shot of the sequence.
just curious, since i'm totally ignorant about cameras and stuff..i was wondering if you've noticed that veronica's changed cameras in the third episode?
I believe it's the same camera as she used in earlier episodes, given that the trailer shot was actually taken from this episode, but the zoom lens looked like it kept switching.
Thanks for this post! I have been looking for a new camera (I'm currently using a Kodak Easy Share) but I'm not sure where to begin looking. I don't need a powerful camera like the ones Veronica uses, but I'd like something up to par. Do you have any suggestions? I will be using it frequently and I'd like something that is easy to carry around, so preferably thin, what do you think of the coolpix cameras by Nikon? If you have a minute to offer a suggestion I'd really appreciate it :)
It all depends on the price and features that you're looking for. The new Coolpixes are fun; I used to have some of the older, twisty models. A good place to look for cameras is to find models at the price range you want and look them up at http://www.dpreview.com

Okay so I know absolutely nothing about cameras but I wanted to get one like Veronica just because it looks totally HOT! I see you have explained what these all are in previous posts but I can't really comprehend this very well so just plain and simple, which one is the best that she has used that won't cost me an arm and a leg? I live in New Zealand (if that is a different place to where you live) so with there being different prices and all please note things may be more expensive/cheaper here. Thank You so much if you can provide me with this information. Photography Geeks ROCK and I hope to become one some day soon. Thank You.
Depending on how you define "an arm and a leg," I'm actually selling the same model Veronica uses on eBay now.

Thanks for the reply but that might take me a while to save up for this camera that IS going to cost me an arm and a leg. Or at least about a year and a half of saving up my hard earned cash. Hopefully by then I can afford a better model. Thank you.
No problem. Last season, she did use the somewhat cheaper Nikon 8800<a href="http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/nikon8800.html</a>.

Why would Nikon want to pay

for Veronica to use an " IKO " camera?

And for those advancing amateurs, let me heartily recommend the Olympus E-10. I bought mine from a camera store via eBay, last May; $333 plus shipping.

Re: Why would Nikon want to pay

HAha i noticed that recently, they stopped the product placement (as they have suddenly started blocking the apple logo) and made it an IKO! SOme movies completely black out the name on the camera.

Yes it's one of those Nikon D70's .. but

The lens .. it can't be the 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom-Nikkor

It has to be the 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF Zoom-Nikkor

And if you pause the episode in the first frame, when you see the camera from the side, you see that it can't be the 80-200mm.

Re: Yes it's one of those Nikon D70's .. but

Yeah, sorry; I appended that in a later post. It has to be the 80-400, because you can see from the next episode that it doesn't have internal focusing.
Gah, thanks for posting this. I think I'm going to cry out for the 8800 for my 20th birthday, so I can be cool like Veronica and be a really lame fangirl and tell my friends it's the cam she uses. XP
Haha, there you go.
