Casting news

From a UPN press release:

Charisma Carpenter ("Angel") and Steve Guttenberg ("The Poseidon Adventure") have joined the cast of UPN's VERONICA MARS, beginning with the critically acclaimed drama's second season premiere.

Carpenter will play Kendall Casablancas, a sexy trophy wife and stepmother to brothers Dick (Ryan Hansen) and Cassidy "Beaver" (Kyle Gallner) Casablancas, two of Veronica's (Kristen Bell) rival, affluent schoolmates. She will appear in at least six episodes. Meanwhile, Guttenberg will star as Woody Goodman, a charismatic major league baseball team owner and leading candidate in the local race for mayor of Neptune, Calif. To show his support for the community, his daughter will be transferring from her private school to Neptune High. He will appear in at least seven episodes.

VERONICA MARS stars Kristen Bell ("Reefer Madness") as a smart, fearless 18-year-old apprentice private investigator dedicated to solving the toughest mysteries of her wealthy seaside community, Neptune, Calif., where the rich and powerful make the rules, own the town and the high school, and desperately try to keep their dirty little secrets just that...secret.

Carpenter recently completed shooting the feature film "Voodoo Moon" opposite Eric Maibus. In television, she portrayed the character Cordelia Chase for seven years on the hit series "Angel" and "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," after originally being featured in a recurring role. Later, she returned to "Angel" for one episode as a guest star for the series' landmark 100th episode.

In television, Carpenter recently guest starred on "LAX" with Heather Locklear, as well as on several episodes of "Charmed." She also co-starred on "Miss Match" with Alicia Silverstone and Ryan O'Neal. In addition, Carpenter starred in the title role of the television movie "See Jane Date," based on the book by Melissa Senate. She has also appeared in several other television shows and feature films.

Steve Guttenberg, who has starred in a dozen films that earned in excess of $100,000,000 at the American box office, is the star of the upcoming television movie "The Poseidon Adventure." The actor starred in four successful series of films: "Police Academy," "Three Men And A Baby," "Short Circuit" and "Cocoon," as well as such acclaimed dramatic hits as "Diner" and "The Boys From Brazil."

His television credits include the mini-series "The Day After" and "Miracle On Ice."

He has a number of directorial efforts, including "P.S., Your Cat Is Dead," the film version of the respected James Kirkpatrick play, which Guttenberg also starred in, wrote and produced.

VERONICA MARS is from Silver Pictures Television, in association with and distributed by Warner Bros. Television Production Inc. Production services provided by Stu Segall Productions, Inc. The show airs Wednesdays (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on UPN.

And by the way, bite me, Television Academy.

And I love me some Charisma Carpenter. But I heard before she was joining, so I'm not excited about it as Guttenberg! Oh, man. Now I need to watch Police Academy and Three Men and A Baby.
I am less than excited about CC being on the show. Firstly, what's with all the Buffy cast recycling? Six months and I wouldn't be surprised to hear Sarah Michelle Gellar's joined the team. Secondly, I find her a mostly mediocre actress. BLAH. Even Dick deserves better.
See my reply below for my thoughts, but, for me, you're an expert when it comes to VM, so I gotta say i trust your judgment and thus am not thrilled about this Charisma gal either.

And I was pretty sick of all the Buffy comparison even before this.

Who makes Steve Guttenberg a star?

Am I the only one who breaks out into the Stonecutter's Song from The Simpsons whenever Steve Guttenberg is mentioned?

Re: Who makes Steve Guttenberg a star?

Weeee dooooooooooo! Weeeee doooooooooo.
(Just showing my ignorance when it comes to TV and actors in general)

I don't know what to think of this. I never watched Buffy so I wouldn't know if this Charisma girl is any good and I still have to Google the other guy.
Charisma is excellent, and Steve Guttenberg is a goof, but a fun goof.

And you have to watch Buffy, if not only to enrich your television experience.
EEE! CC on VM - I've died and gone to heaven. Who thought I could love VM more???
me exact feelings! *GLEE*
I like Cordelia, but that's all she can play.
I think that CC could pull off the rich trophy stepmom roll, although I have to see for sure, but yeah the Buffy actors just keep on coming. I loved the show so I can't say I'm too upset. And Steve Guttenberg, that one I'm going to have to see to beleive.
I actually figured Charisma Carpenter would do it.

Steve Guttenberg is who I'm more excited about. I hearted the first two Police Academy movies, and three men and a little baby!
Cool i like Charisma, she'll be playing the typical trophy wife, she'll be like old school Cordy probably all ditzy and bitchy haha. YAY Steve Guttenburg....splendid, his curls were one of the many things that made the 1980s memorable!!
I haven't decided if this is a good thing or not.
Yay for Steve Guttenberg I loved him as Mahoney in Police Academy flicks. And I think that Charisma Carpenter will be pretty good as a trophy wife - she has definitely looks for it, and I think that it's that type of role (bitchy&shallow=old cordy) that she should be able to pull it off. Also I think that some new people might tune in because of her. So yeah, I'm actually really happy with these casting choices.
I agree that it may pull some new people over to the show. I know if I hadn't already gotten hooked just recently and I would have heard that Charisma was on the show I would have watched for her. In fact hearing that Alyson Hannigan was going to guest star was actually one of the things that made me become interested in the show last year.
Oh my. I can't believe Charisma is playing the trophy wife. I don't think she'll do a great job. Sorry, I just don't think of her as this kind of actress. Of course she can proove me wrong but...man, I didn't like that.
Mmmmmmm, I _love_ Charisma. Her work really improved once she became the lead actress on Angel.

Steve Guttenberg - hey, I haven't seen the guy in years. I say give him a chance. After all, the writing's still good no matter who says the lines.

Sincerely, Allaine
I'm so excited about Steve. I adore him. He was one of my favorite actors for the longest time. I just knew they'd choose CC for the trophy wife. She was ok as Cordy but I've seen her in some made for tv movies and blech. Steve!!!! He's old enough to be my daddy but I'd still marry him.
